Beyond the Pale: Bravely Taking on Optic Nerve Pallor (COPE #126950)
Optic nerve pallor can present a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. While nerve pallor can be subtle and the etiology may not be readily clear, identifying the cause of pallor can help prevent further damage and even save lives in some cases.
This 1-hour, asynchronous CE course reviews the anatomy of the optic nerve, how to differentiate glaucomatous from non-glaucomatous optic nerve pallor, various etiologies of nerve pallor, and provides a guide to determine the likely etiology. Per COPE requirements, optometrists must pass a 10-question post-course test with a 70% or better in order to receive CE credit for this course.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the difference between glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous optic neuropathy.
- Review the different etiologies of optic neuropathy.
- Provide a guide on obtaining a proper case history, performing appropriate clinical testing, and ordering additional labwork/imaging to determine etiology of optic neuropathy.
